This race was used to send two (roughly) matched VIIIs out and see how we have developed as a squad and to see who was in contention for seats in M1. The row down was... well, lets be honest, pants. Not together up the slide, bodies flinging all over the place like the crazy cat lady off The Simpsons hurling cats left, right and centre, and blade timing was off. As we got towards the end of the row down we were starting to put in some decent patches (encouragingly at rate too). The race started well, mainly sheltered from the large head wind due to the bends. We kept at a rate of 30-31 as we hadn't done much rate work. Coming out of grassy felt nice, which was spurred on by having a Clare contingent cheering us on at the Plough... Esther exercised her royal wave brilliantly as this point to signal to our supporters for further cheer. We then went round Ditton corner into a stonking head wind. We knew it was going to be strong and Esther prepped us about this well in advance when rounding the corner. Despite it being mega windy we actually rowed surprisingly well considering. Coming up the railway bridge the head wind was less apparent and we just slugged it out up to the finish line. It wasn't the cleanest row, but considering it was a scratch matched VIII, it was a pretty good showing. As a squad we are looking in pretty good shape... roll on Mays!

13th Overall in a time of 10:25 (Mother Category Winners)
After a promising pre-race paddle down to Jesus lock to check the boat over and give us time to make any adjustments I think it's fair to describe the row down to the start as disappointing. Whether it was a lack of focus or some pre-race nerves and tension it didn't set us up well. After a slap on the wrist for everyone from Mr Buckingham the race itself had some positive moments. The push at the end to make sure we overhauled the Robinson M2 crew in front showed that the fitness and pace is there when needed. Overall it was a bit of a scrappy race and it's just a pity we didn't row the whole course at the level we showed in patches.
Everyone is probably slightly disappointed to have not got closer to the other Clare crew, but to leave as category winners and with a decent overall finish position as a scratch crew cannot be deemed a failure.
